Online Scripture Study

WHY should I incorporate the internet into my Gospel study?
 - We talked about reasons such as for your own benefit, for your family, to share the gospel, to stay up on your technology, and just for something new and fun!

SCRIPTURES.LDS.ORG - From a personal or desktop computer:

1. Create an account. You just need your member number and birthday. Record your member number here: _________________________
2. Sign in - this brings you to your account, and back to the home page.
3. Go to the scriptures. Either click on Scriptures on middle left of screen or Under the Menu > Study > choose scriptures from the list of study options.
*Note all the other study options!!!
*You can also go straight to where you left off by going to your study notebook (Or at least the last thing you marked).
4. When you click on Scriptures, you can search for keywords or scriptures, view or listen to any of the standard works, use study helps (including searching headings, verses, and footnotes), download the scriptures and use the scriptures in many available formats, share links to passages, and personal notes (email, twitter, facebook, and delicious), change languages (21 offered currently), or click on several great study spotlights, such as Fires of Faith and Stories for Children.
5. Start reading, listening, watching, and feasting!

MY STUDY NOTEBOOK
  • From the home page, it is under Tools > Study Notebook or Menu > Study > My Study Notebook. You can also access it at any time by signing in using the bar at the bottom of the page you are studying. Then each time you read something that is available for Study Notebook, the study tools will automatically appear at the bottom of the page.
  • As you’re reading content on LDS.org, such as scriptures or lessons, you can highlight or bookmark the content, add notes, and save this information to your Study Notebook. Your Study Notebook is your own personal, private space on LDS.org to collect your gospel content and notes.
  • The Study Notebook is especially helpful if you're doing research for a talk or lesson and are browsing resources across LDS.org. You can read cross-references easily. You can "tag"  your notes to categorize them.
  • It includes a personal journal, FAQ, video tutorials, and a very helpful Help section.
  • FYI - The Relief Society book Daughters In My Kingdom, our manual for the year, and other curriculum is available to read online using your study notebook! https://lds.org/manual/relief-society?lang=eng

MOBILE APPS  - For mobile device like Apple and Android smartphones, iPads and Android tablets, Palm, Blackberries, Kindle Fire, or Nooks. We can't possibly learn about all of it right now! Go to www.lds.org > Menu > Media Library for LOTS more information on media and studying the Gospel. It is user-friendly, easy to understand, and cool! The LDS Media Library is designed to help members access different types of media, such as videos, audio, and images, in order to find Church resources in one, easy-to-navigate location. The theme of this site is “Learn, Share, Create.” This site provides numerous opportunities to do each of these activities, helping individuals, families, and organizations come unto Christ through the use of wholesome media.

The LDS Media Library helps you access different types of media, such as videos, audio, and images, in order to find Church resources in one location. The theme of this site is “Learn, Share, Create” and does that by helping individuals, families, and organizations come unto Christ through the use of wholesome media. It tells you about internet use in the home, for lessons, and sharing the Gospel. It helps you access media using various methods, and it invites you to create and share your own media. The Media library gives great information and tells about things like Roku, Twitter, Youth sites, sharing media or experiences, and Helping in the Vineyard. Don't know what these things are? Go check it out!

TECHNOLOGY SAFETY
To make sure to keep you and your family safe with all this new technology, visit tech.lds.org and read information on filters, and other ways to be protected. Go to tech.lds.org >Wiki>Internet and Family Safety. It gives general safety information, specific information for a certain type of media, common concerns, and security concerns.

Here are some other helpful links from lds.org:
  • https://lds.org/ensign/2012/02/keeping-safe-and-balanced-in-a-google-youtube-twitter-facebook-ieverything-world?lang=eng&query=internet+filters

As for safety on mobile devices, the protection hasn't quite caught up with the growth, so mobile devices are more susceptible to things like pornography and malicious software. So, regularly install  updates, use a mobile security app, don’t make changes to your device that enable you to use it with fewer restrictions, and read reviews and check permissions when possible. For more information, go to http://cybercrimenews.norton.com.

ProtectFamily.org suggests 4 internet filtering companies, and gives them reviews. They are K9 Web Protection, Net Nanny, Pandora's Hope, and Open DNS. Go to their website or to each website listed for more information. These companies protect mobile devices as well, as far as I can tell.

Also, remember you're always safe with anything displaying the official church logo!
